JORNADA DE TOLERANCIA Y ÁGORA EN EL IES MONASTIL/ CELEBRATION OF THE TOLERANCE DAY AND THE AGORA IN THE IES MONASTIL

We celebrated a Day dedicated to Tolerance on Wednesday the 3rd of November. It Involved all students from the age of 15 (3rd and 4th of ESO, 2nd PCPI, Bachillerato and Tourism Vocational Studies). The activity began at 11 am with a warm up including some dynamic and audiovisual activities. Later they took the test and were given the keys for a self-correction. After that, all the groups met in the playground for a follow-up, shared lunch and finally took part in an Agora meeting (an opinion forum) at the School Hall. As a participation gift all students got mousepads, ball-pens and wristbands.
The test results were very satisfactory. Most students showed a good knowledge of their own degree of tolerance since in the introduction to the test they were asked to give a number from 0 (completely intolerant) to 150 (fully tolerant) according to the perception of their own position on the subject, and, once having taken the test, the majority of them had a difference with the score of 15 points or less. Most of the scores were between 100 and 130 points.

The E-Tolerance Test project was closed on November the 25th and 26th in a conference that took place in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, with a representative from our school. A large number of teenage and young adult Bulgarian students attended and took part in this closing meeting. It ended with the presentation of the new website on tolerance: www.tolerancetest.eu, which will enable all young Europeans to take the test, check their score and comment on issues of tolerance in five languages (Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Bulgarian and English). And, on doing that, we have indeed been the lucky first ones.

Our Comenius project Net of Tolerance finished one and a half years ago; however, it does not mean that we then stopped our commitment to it or to the European dimension, but rather the opposite.

Following the path of that project, several teachers in our school have carried out individual European programmes since, and others will shortly do so. Besides, we are at present involved in the development of a new Leonardo Association with new partners, about which we have already taken part in a contact seminar.

Regarding tolerance, we have been engaged in actions that promote attitudes of respect, solidarity and integration. Our school has continued to belong to the network of schools working on solidarity and we have developed different activities on the matter. On the other hand, we are still in touch with Güllü Oruc, one of the Turkish teachers who started the Net of tolerance with us, through post and on-line communications among our students.

We must mention that in early 2009, the IES Monastil started a collaboration with the Intermunicipal Consortium for Employment in the Vinalopó Valley in a European project on tolerance for the youth together with other three participant institutions from different countries: the Netherlands, Bulgaria and Portugal. The aim of the project was to develop and pilot a test which would allow young people to check their degree of tolerance in various situations that may occur in everyday life, and from it be able to reflect on it and improve themselves in their relationships with other people.

The four partners have pursued a line of work that was established by joint agreement of their representatives in the first meeting held in Lisbon in February 2009. There we fixed the common criteria for the preparation of the test, the distribution channels for the different promotional items and the dissemination of the final product through the creation of a website.

In April 2009 there was a second meeting of representatives from the four countries in Elda. A first draft of the tests of each partner was presented and discussed, as well as a sample of the promotional articles and an outline of the future website. We also worked then on the schedule of actions to undertake in the rest of the programme and fixed the closing conference and results for November 2010 in Sofia.

Our school, in close collaboration with the Intermunicipal Consortium for Employment in the Vinalopó Valley has undertaken the following actions in the programme:

-Producing the Spanish version of the test and handing in its English version to the rest of partners.
-Helping in the development of the project according to the agreed steps.
-Participating in the international partnership meetings and sharing our experience in the subject.
-Piloting and evaluating the final version of the test, arranging the agora of opinion and distributing the promotional items.
-Disseminating the test, the results and the scope of the project in the field of education and in the media.

Moros y Cristianos en Elda 2009 / Moors and Christians celebrations 2009

A new edition of the yearly local celebration of Moors and Christians in Elda has taken place. Five days full of activity in the town, from May the 28th to June the 1st. We represent the coexistence in the place of these two communities for centuries. A historical example of tolerance that we represent each year opening our houses, our arms and hearts to welcome everybody to participate and enjoy the celebrations with us. Special days in which everybody forgets their problems and enmities to share good feelings, respect and caring for others.

6000 people, (a 10% of its inhabitants) belonging to 9 festive associations dress up either as moors or christians and go into the streets to take part in different events; armed battles, parades, marches and processions. The town gets transformed. Its streets are ornamented, its people are dressed up for the occasion and the smell of gunpowder and the sound of band music and fireworks fill the air and frame the events. A great experience for everyone!

Todos iguales, todos diferentes / Everybody is similar, everybody is different

The spirit of Comenius showed in our school last week. We refer to the winners of the Comics Contest organised to celebrate the 200 anniversary of Edgar Allan Poe`s birth. We were very pleased to have some of our students of gipsy origin taking part in the activities, compromising and enriching us with the contributions of their ancient culture. We all have artistic values if we are determined and get involved. The comic by Ramón Giménez surpised everyone. It made us all open our mouths. How original! Congratulations Ramón, go on this way! Next time you will get the first prize.

We also congratulate the first prize winner, Alberto Carcelén, whose comic was extraordinary. We hope more students get involved next time.

Último meeting en Valencia / Our last meeting in Valencia

Our Comenius Project is approaching its end. We have had two years of shared activities: talks and debates, solidarity activities, touristic and cultural routes around the three countries, but above all we have enjoyed a marvelous experience which has enriched everybody and has allowed all of us to change our views.

As we already said at the beginning, to know is to love, and now that we know the others better, we love more one another.

This last meeting was celebrated in Valencia on April the 26th and 27th. We enjoyed a beautiful city full of flowers and perfume. We went from the Serrano Towers, where we started the city tour, to the Arts and Science Museum where we finished it. Our visit summarized in a single day more than 8 centuries of history. Past and present held hands in this city, modern and traditional at the same time. Perhaps the most interesting part of the trip, at least for the one writing these lines, was the visit to the Valencian Parliament. We are not aware of the relevance of the institutions which represent us in the public powers till we have the occasion of experimenting by ourselves the responsibility of sitting on one of the seats in the parliament and realize the great importance that the issues dealt with in there have for all citizens.
We suppose our Greek friends came back to Xanthi feeling happy after having visited Valencia and the Valencians, and it is a pity that the Turks could not join us. We sincerely hope Fate will let us meet again in one of its whimsical bends. Who knows?

We will soon show our meeting photos and the work done by the participants.

Elecciones Europeas 2009 / European Election 2009

On July 7th the European Election 2009 will be held in every member state and the voted candidates will be chosen for a 5 year term ending in 2014. They will follow the Nice Treaty at first (by which there will be 732 Members of Parliament elected instead of the present 785), but in 2010 the Lisbon Treaty will be put into practice and then the number of MPs will increase up to 751 without a new election, and some countries - such as Spain – will increase its representation ( from 50 to 54 MPs in our case).

In each country their representatives are elected separately and the candidates are annouced from within their national parties though the political parties with similar ideologies in the whole of Europe usually join forces.

In Spain there will be a single national district which means that every vote will count the same and the sum of them will be proportionately divided among the voted candidates according to d`Hondt system.

The percentage of voters is in every country lower than in inner elections owing to the fact that we think that their results will not very seriously affect us. This is not really true as the European competence is becoming more and more important in all matters and disinterest is thus mainly due to ignorance.

It will be the first time our last year students take part in an election. Furthermore, the fact that it is a European one means they will have to get informed not only about the national parties’ programmes and candidates, but also about the ones presented by other parties from other countries with similar ideologies with which they can ally or make agreements either before or after June. A responsible task which the entry into adult life entails being also a part of a small individual contribution to an open, democratic and plural society.

The Greek youngsters from Afxentio and Xanthi, neighbours of our Comenius mates, will also vote for their representatives, who will work together with ours and may possibly have a decisive role in the fact that our other friends and partners from Inçirliova, in Turkey, are soon members of our big European Union. Let`s hope so!

Ana Frank, una historia vigente / Anna Frank: an updated story

Another activity about Tolerance included in the calendar of actions of our Comenius Programme has been Anna Frank’s exhibition.

Thanks to Anna Frank’s Foundation and through the programme Solidarity within the classroom, we have received 36 wall displays with 150 photographs which are being exhibited at school.

This activity also includes a DVD, didactic material and a conference. It deals with the historic facts occurred in Europe between 1939 and 1945 and its objective is to spread the people’s awareness about the importance of defending Human Rights. This issue was already dealt with in the History class and shown on our corridor walls.

During the last days in March all gropus at school have visited the exhibition and appreciated its value. It has allowed them to reflect on the repression suffered by the jews after World War II and connect it to what is now taking place in other countries.

The next scheduled activity is the participation in the contests organized by Solidarity within the classroom (short writings), Colourful smiles (photos) and Move on (recordings). They all are based on solidarity, democracy and tolerance.

The best stories/photos/video will be shown in the Solidarity within the classroom web and we even have the possibility of applying for some of the prizes: www.solidaridadeneleaula.org.

The second meeting of the Alliance of Civilizations held in Istanbul and backed by Spain and Turkey ended successfully on April 7th. Its purpose is to change the politic and military point of view from force and imposition to respect and tolerant dialogue at a time when society should have matured enough to allow such values to be present at international level.
Support has increased and NATO and the President of the United States, Barack Obama, have become involved in it. 5 chiefs of State and 31 ministers have attended the meeting as well as other religious and civil leaders up to a total of 1500 people.
This alliance has become an influential initiative of the UN as there are 84 countries and 17 international organisations involved in it. Barak Obama attended, on Monday April the 6th, a reception meeting together with José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Spanish and Turkish Prime Ministers. The following day, the USA President took part in an international gathering of religious leaders and flew to Irak in a non scheduled visit what clearly shows an interest for multilateralism in international relations focused on intelligent diplomacy.
Our blog, having as a purpose to deal with all matters connected with tolerance, is of course sensitive to all those happenings, though changes at that level are slow and should also always be both cautious and thoughtful. It is indeed a good perspective for us to be near the end of our programme and foresee a promising future.

Esperamos vuestros comentarios y sugerencias.

In a blog whose subject is tolerante, inclusion and social compromise for equality we do not forget disabled people.
We are firstly going to refer to the art students in our school who have taken part in a contest organised by ONCE (National Blind People Organisation) to show that it is important to work from every position for the elimination of prejudices and barriers disabled people are victims of. We have a lot of objectives in mind: the access to honorable employment, the removal of physical barriers, the provision of resources and facilities to promote their acces to public places, individual economical support to improve their well-being, social integration, absence of discrimination, etc.

Surely, the best way to understand the handicaps a blind, deaf or wheeled chaired person has to face up is to try and do things on our own in the same circumstance. Empathy helps us understand, and from this understanding we can try to make real the dream of being part of a tolerant world where differences are deeply respected.

We propose a debate about the subject taking as referente the film Without you by Raimon Masllorens, which deals with the topic of the double discrimination which means to be a blind woman: the story of overcoming the fact of becoming suddenly blind and who paradoxically can clearly see her situation and future through a dramatic catharsis caused by her disability. The topic appears in a lot of novels, such as the well known Essay on blindness by José Saramago, the Nobel Prize winner, which has recently been made a very interesting film.

Our 1st and 2nd year students have given expression to a reflexion on this subject in posters and the results have been excellent indeed! We are sure they will get some of the prizes. Now it is our turn to contribute. We expect your opinions and suggestions.

We would like to consider a comment from one of our bloggers in connection with the post about the Internacional Day of Working Women. Our friend says that Nicole Kidman has been named Ambassador for the UN to fight against sex abuse. We think it is fantastic and it should be mentioned.
It is believed that the idea has been proposed by the European Parliament and the UN, which have united efforts to face up this terrible blight which lots of women are victims of in the world, in most cases surrounded by a searing misterious acceptance.
Kidman illustrates a campaign in the net called “ Say NO to sex abuse”, being once more an example of solidarity and compromise.
Written statement of the support to the European Parliament proposal has been recently issued and has been endorsed by most Menbers of Parliament.

On March 28th at half past eight p. m. you have an appointment for the sake of planet Earth. It is to show that the fight against the climate change is possible. It is a WWF proposal. In fact, it is the most extensive campaign ever done in defence of the environment in which there will be one thousand million participants. Earth Hour 2009 will involve governments, citizens and private companies in a combined action to draw attention on the effects of global warming and demand actions from the political leaders to control the emission of CO2 before it is too late. So far, more than 1700 towns and cities in 80 countries have compromised to turn off the lights of their most characteristic buildings as a symbolic support to Earth Hour.
We will take part in it. Are you joining us? You can get information of how to support the idea in:http://www.wwf.es/que_hacemos/cambio_climatico/la_hora_del_planeta_2009/

Construyendo Europa / Building Europe

It is in periods of economical crisis and ups and downs in the market when we can check the stability of private businesses and institutions. The weakest disappear and the best structured ones survive because they are based on longer term activities and not in easy and immediate unplanned fortune.

Something similar occurs with this big entitiy which is Europe. It is clear that its identity is a complex puzzle of different cultures, values, ideologies, traditions and ways of undertanding life. To those, we must add political and strategic interests in order to obtain a better position in the current global contest. However, it is also true that there are common roots and a – sometimes glorious and some other times miserable – past which links us.

Defining the European identity is a difficult task, starting from setting the present and future borders of the European Union. It is also risky to generalize a concrete ideology as well as either religious or lay values. We do not even agree on whether we want a federal Europe or a free market area, and furthermore the common currency is not being shared by some countries because they do not trust the idea. And all these facts make the project of a common Europe sometimes seem superficial and unstable.

The economical and political indicators show that Europe is not solid, but perhaps, we ought not to pay so much attention to this consideration but to the fact of reinforcing our most firm aspects which allow us to believe in a prosperous future. To achieve it we should strengthen the cultural links among the European Union countries; and a good example is the Erasmus programme, which allows us to foster the movility of thousands of students, in the same way as the Comenius programme through multilateral long term learning associations.

A Secondary Education pupil ought to consider him/herself a European citizen and know the European Union laws and institutions in the same way as the classical culture which we have inherited. And it would only be possible if there were a common subject in all European educational systems about our Common European History.

European History and Culture started in Athens and Rome, flowing into the dark Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Ilustration and Romanticism. It is not possible to study Literature, the History of Philosophy, Music or Spanish Art without connecting it with what was happening in these same moments in Europe. That is the reason why in this blog we agree with Carles Casajuana`s proposal of creating a new common subject for the whole of Europe similar to the one named “Education for Citizenship” but from a historical – less politicized- point of view. A tough challenge for our politicians, though it would be a good idea to let educational matters to educationalists and teachers, instead.
