In the previous days to the celebration of the International Day of Tolerance we could listen to an excellent selection of music from different places in the world which enlivened the periods between lessons and break time allowing us to make a musical trip around the planet.
We started our travel in the Maghreb with the powerful raï sounds. This musical genre started in Argelia at the beginning of the 20th century, arrived in France in the 90s and from there spread into the whole of Europe and the rest of the world merging with other tendencies such as reaggae, por jazz,... Some of the most well-known musicians we were able to listen to these days are master Khaled and Cheb Mami.
From Argelia we moved to Senegal, with the suggestive voice of Ismael-Lô, famous in our country for having taken part in some sound tracks in several Pedro Almodovar`s films.
Then we flew to Cabo Verde, birthplace of the barefoot prima donna Cesaria Evora, awarded in 2004 with the best World Music Grammy.
Los Tribalistas, band in which Carlinhos Brown played, offered us the present day Brazilian music, far away from easy topics without getting apart from the long and wide wealth of Bossa Nova.
From Brazil we went on to Mexico to share the new rancheras by Lila Downs and finished our trip in Cuba with the best Cuban rhythms and jazz: the legendary Trío Matamoros, Benny Moré, Pérez Prado, Paquito de Rivera, Chucho Valdés... As a final top for this musical journey, we had the opportunity to enjoy the live concert by Habib, the gypsy from Argel, accompanied at the drums by one of our students.

¿Sabías que... / Did you know that...

Jean Mitchel Jarre was made Goodwill Embassador in 1993 on behalf of Tolerance and Youth for the UNESCO?

That is the way in which Jarre`s political activity starts for the benefit of the universal rights of people, taking part in meetings and performing mass concerts in places considered by the UNESCO as part of humankind`s heritage.

The concert he offered for tolerance in Paris, at the very foot of the Eiffel Tower, in the 50th anniversary of the UNESCO is among the best remembered moments of his work as Goodwill Ambassador. He composed a piece about tolerance especially for the occasion. More recently, he did another performance, the Millenium Concert, in front of the Egyptian Pyramids. Tireless supporter of the rights and education of Youth, he is a real messenger of tolerance, plural culture and respect for every youngster in the world.

As a pioneer and well-known star of electro-acoustic music, his mass concerts, which combine high sound and laser technology as well as other effects as fireworks, always gather thousands and thousands of followers.

Music has always been a powerful tool to transmit feelings and its worldwide language has always meant a way of expression for the ideals of artists compromised with the social problems of their time which has reached millions of people regardless of their language, belief or race.
We all remember beautiful songs which move us whenever we listen to them. Some of them become real “Hymns for peace”, as Imagine by John Lennon, and Blowing in the wind by Bob Dylan.
From this blog we encourage you to help us find the best song to transmit the ideal of tolerance we are concerned with in our Comenius Association. We propose one by Rosario Flores. Its author was her brother Antonio, but Rosario has recently reissued his last album quite successfully. Its title is No dudaría, (I wouldn`t doubt it).
If you feel like listening to the song while watching images about war and poverty, click here.
And for the ones thinking of us as “interested” people for promoting our sake, we have got another video clip of one of the latest songs which also talks about war and power. The mythical band Coldplay has taught us a lesson on citizenship both in the music and in the lyrics of the song Viva la Vida (Cheers for life). But what we like most is the videoclip. Can you guess what painting was taken the idea from?

If I could forget
Everything I was
If I could wipe out
Everything I saw
I wouldn`t doubt
I wouldn`t doubt to laugh again

If I could explain
The people I murdered
If I could burn
The weapons I used
I wouldn`t doubt
I wouldn`t doubt to laugh again

I promise to consider merriment
To learn from my experience
But never, never again
Use violence

If I could sow
The fields I devastated
If I could give back
The peace I snatched
I wouldn`t doubt
I wouldn`t doubt to laugh again

If I could forget
That crying I heard
If I could manage
To get it away from me
I wouldn`t doubt
I wouldn`t doubt to laugh again

I promise to consider merriment
To learn from my experience
But never, never again
Use violence

Zeybeks are relatively slow and have more swaggering attitude than other dances. They represent the determination, braveness and strength of the males. Zeybeks' origin is known to be Turkish. They have also been used by Greeks. Greek Cypriots call it "Zeybekikos" and Rhodos Greeks call it "Turkikos". They are very popular in Western and Central Anatolia. In zeybeks which have lyrics, the parts with lyrics are not danced. Cyprus Zeybeks are relatively faster. Abdal Zeybegi, Sarhos Zeybegi, Kibris Zeybegi, Iskele Zeybegi are the most popular zeybeks...

Zeybeks or sometimes Zeibeks were people living in Asia Minor. The majority of them came from Yörük and Turkmen villages.[citation needed]
Before the establishment of the Republic of Turkey, large concentrations of Zeibeks could be found in western Anatolia, particularly in Isparta, Burdur, Afyon, Kütahya, Uşak, Denizli, Aydın, İzmir, Manisa, Mugla, Antalya, and the Balıkesir area.
Zeybeks were mountain warriors of Western Anatolia during the 13th - 19th centuries. Zeybeks generally had Turkmen and Yörük origins. They acted as protectors of village people against landlords, bandits and tax collectors. A leader of a Zeybek gang was called "efe" and his soldiers were known as "kızan"."Kızan" was generally used for untrained Zeybeks. There was generally a tribe democracy in group. Decisions was taken in a democratic way, after the decision was taken "Efe" has an uncontroversial authority. They followed definite rituals for all actions; for example, the promotion of a "kızan" to zeybek was very similar to Ahi rituals.
Zeybeks had a special dance in which performers simulated hawks. Romantic songs about their bravery are still popular in Turkish folk music. The yatagan sword was their primary weapon, but most of them carried firearms as well.

Bewitched Love by Manuel de Falla is a music composition which inspired Carlos Saura to produce a film with the same title. Love, dance and death are the three keys for the plot. Carmelo is in love with Candela, whose father has arranged her marriage to José, according to the gypsy law. José continues meeting his lover Lucía after getting married to Candela. He is stabbed to death and Carmelo is charged with the murder and, so, imprisoned for four years. When Carmelo is free again, he watches terrified how Candela dances with José`s soul every night in the place were he was killed. A witch suggests him to dance with Candela the fire dance to let free the bad feelings which separate them. They do not succeed in the attempt and their only solution is that the one who was Jose`s lover in life becomes so in death, as well.

¿Sabías que... / Did you know that...?

... the famous opera Carmen which personifies a Spanish spirited and passionate woman was written by the French writer Prospère Merimèe and a French musician, Leopold Bizet, composed the melody?
In Carmen we can identify all foreign topics about Spain. The image of superficiality and ignorance which we call “the brass band and tambourine philosophy” was spread by the 19th century French and British travellers and still remains among the present European tourists. We can observe these features in the plot characters:
-a sensual, free and impulsive gypsy woman
-a faithful sergeant in love able to escape from the army because of war and become a smuggler and.
-a well-known bullfighter
And of course, the three of them involved in a passion murder.

Among the events organised for this 200 anniversary, there is a choice of different shows performing 19th Century Spanish music and dance. Carmen is one of these musical pieces in which the local Spanish topics reach global fame. The plot strength is enhanced by the power of the classical Spanish ballet and the romantic musicality of its melody, though its lyrics were written in French. The fight between a soldier (possibly French) and a bullfighter for their love for a free and independent woman becomes, thanks to this opera, a universal script for both the theatre and the cinema.
It is a pleasure for the senses to recall some of these worldwide known musical pieces which at the same time allow us to enjoy the taste of our roots and traditions. For music lovers we recommend other classical compositions from Falla, Granados and Albéniz and Ravel's Bolero. You can find them in the download box.
