4th meeting, 2nd part

How good are the pictures our private photagrapher,Manolo, takes! More and more palaces, that was the point of our sightseeing in our second day in Istanbul. We thank our Turk partners who guided us around so much western luxury. Western because we seemed to have magically visited Versailles. However, if we have to make a decision, we prefer eastern tendencies, the ones we thought we would see there, in Istanbul.

Perhaps the most overwhelming part were the rooms where Ataturk spent his last days. The best: the cuisine and the friends we made around the taste of delicious dishes. (Good regards to Bezir. We wish you go on improving your already very good Spanish). The most astonishing; the visit to a cemetery. We, humans like to check that when death arrives it is not important which religion you follow, we are all the same. And to end up, the anecdote of meeting some different wedding celebrations around the square next to Eyup Mosque.

De lo divino y lo mundano / About the wordly and the divine

Revising photos and more photos taken during our latest trip to Istanbul (How lucky the people in the Comenius Programme are!) to make a compilation for this ethereal entity which is our blog, we have been witnesses of an unusual battle. The images became alive and independent of our wish and came once and again to our retina placed in a fanciful sort, making shocking pairs which repelled one another and yet had a powerful attraction.

We are referring to the images taken the same day in different places: The Spices Bazaar and the Derviches Dance Show. In time, only a couple of hours separated the two experiences; in space, they were located in the same district within Istanbul, at a distance of a few minutes` walk. That day we experienced opposing sensations: the physical appreciation of senses in the huge market which is the Spices Bazaar, and the deepest and most exquisite spirituality in the crypt of an ancient mosk, now transformed into an exhibition hall.

The frantic pulse and hectic hustle of trading inside the most well-known market in the world contrasted with the musicians and dancers` quiet concentration before their performance. Just after watching the colourful vividness of products and people in the bazaar, we suddenly got into a silent absorption reaching a mystical climax.

In the background of our memory, without knowing exactly why, we still continue pairing these two sceneries, different views of the particular eastern universe of Istanbul. Perhaps in our Hispanic-arabic essence we also have within us this contradiction of worldy and spiritual aspects. It may be through the senses the way to get to the purest, the most meaningful state. Good Mediterraneans as we are, fragances, tastes and colours are important in our life style and are the means which allow us to reflect on trascendental matters. It has always been like that among the most cultivated men in our culture: Góngora and Quevedo moved from the lowest and unrefined thinkings to the most learned considerations. Fascinating heritage from which we got the finest and most delicate love poets: Ibn Hazm from Córdoba, whose Collar de la paloma is considered to be the purest medieval incarnation of muslim Spain.

Estambul, cuarto meeting (14-19 noviembre) / Istambul, 4th meeting

This is the first series of photographies from the 4th meeting of our Comenius association Net of Tolerance in Istanbul. There are so many and our experience was so good that it has been very difficult to make a selection. We will very soon show the rest of them.
These ones were taken the first day on our arrival at the hotel and during our first touristic visits: Topkapi Palace, Saint Sophia, The Blue Mosque and the Cisterns.
We want to thank our photographer, Manolo, who has again done a terrific job behind the camera. It seems to be a simple task, but catching the best images, the best perspectives and trying to guess how a concrete setting is going to work out concerning light, distance and so on, is not easy at all.
Manolo, congratulations for your great work and thank you for your company!

Un ejemplo de tolerancia / An example of Tolerance

On November 16th, we celebrate the International Day for Tolerance and, for this reason, we want to do something very special to honour this great virtue which links us together and names our Comenius Association.

We invite you to send any kind of work in connection to TOLERANCE: images, posters, sentences, drawings, texts, poems ... but it would also be very interesting to do one single common activity as a direct reflection of our contribution to the improvement of tolerance in our surroundings.

We expect your contributions! All of them will be welcomed and dealt with in common in the meeting we will have in Istambul next November.

So far, our small contribution to the spread of tolerance in the world is the good coexistence among the members of our association. To prove it we have the photos taken in our latest meeting in Izmir last June. The working sessions and the institutional visits alternated, as can be seen, in an atmosphere of kind friendship which is constantly becoming deeper, thanks to the charming long talks and the interchange of experiences full of affection. No doubt, it is the best medicine for the treatment of intolerance.

If one image has remained in our retina after our trip to Turkey last June is the huge archaeological wealthiness of this country. We had been told about Efes being a great sample of ancient Greece, and we have agreed to it after our visit. We could also admire the remains of a great past splendour in Mileto, Prienne, Afrodisias...
The visit to these ancient cities made us feel members of the same civilization: the Mediterranean one, to which we belong as descendants of a saga of men and women worthy of our respect and admiration.
Beside those noble stones one feels both tiny and limited. And we realize that everything surrounding us in the present world is vane and trivial. We call progress to our easy and comfortable life, technological development, hasty living, the adquisition of goods and compulsive expenditure. Sometimes, looking back into the past makes us be aware of the real important timeless values and admire the astonishing beauty and majesty of wide straight avenues, imposing buildings on perfectly balanced columns and a great urban talent which diminishes nowadays architects and engineers to mere amateurs. And of course we cannot forget the perfect symbiosis of urban and natural landscape. How much can we still learn from the classic period!

Beauty, harmony and virtuosity, all in one, recall who we were and make us think of what we would like to be in the course of history. Let`s preserve this heritage for our descendants. Its our duty.

MOORS AND CHRISTIANS FESTIVITIES IN ELDA

The moor party “Huestes del Cadí” are a group of 900 people. The last day in each year festivity they meet to be taken “a family photo” as remembrance. Satur, the English teacher in the Comenius project, is a member of the group, as well as her family. Maybe you can distinguish her face among the rest. The first photo is “the family photo 2007”at Saint Ann’s church main entrance.

At 8:00 a.m. the groups take part in a parade called “Diana” in which they march silently listening to some of the pieces at the music box enjoying the solemnity of the still sleeping town.
Satur’s son and daughter (Adrian and Paula) were the infant leaders in the 2007 celebration. They marched on horseback preceding their group in the parade. The dresses and make-up were specially designed and made for them.
Also you can see Manolo, our Vicedirector, and Satur, our Direction Accountant and English teacher, wearing the traditional moor costumes of each of their groups.

Fotos de Tesalónica / Photos from Salonik

We include the photos sent for the blog by our friend Güllü. We are sorry for the delay but we have been very busy preparing other posts.
The photos were taken during our visit to Greece. When we returned to Spain, our Turk friends took the bus for 400 km from Xanthi to Salonik, Atatürk’s birthplace.
The photos were done in the house he was born. In the download box you can
also see a presentation about Salonik which Güllü has sent us. The explanations are in Turkish but, fortunately images don’t need to be translated.
We are glad to see their faces again. We will meet them again in a few weeks. We know you are doing your best to prepare our visit to your school. Don’t worry too much, everything will be OK. See you in Izmir.
