Saint Anthony is a very dear Saint for the people from Elda. He is the Patron Saint of our festivities of Moors and Christians which are held for 5 days every year in the month of June to commemorate that in the past we were invaded by the Moors and they lived among us for 8 centuries, before they were expelled from Spain in 1492.
Years ago, these festivities took place on Saint Anthony’s Day, but given the fact that people did not enjoy outdoor activities in cold weather, it was decided that some kind of celebration should remain in January, while the really important thing should be moved onto the summer season. The 2008 edition has ben dated from Thursday, May the 29th to Monday, June the 2nd, so they will start in a few days and every person in town is already lookinng forward to them.During these 5 days, there are parades, simulated battle shows, processions, dramatical performances, firework displays, etc. To illustrate the wars and fights between moors and christians at that time.
All that takes place in a very enjoyable atmosphere, to which everybody is welcomed. A big proportion of our inhabitants are members of the different associations taking part in the events organised for these days, and wear typical medieval dresses. These associations are called “Comparsas”. There are four moor comparsas and five christian ones. Each of them has two couples (a kids and an adult one) which take the leadership for a year. Both females are called “Abanderada” (meaning “flag holder”) and the two males are called “Capitán” (captain).
When our Turk and Greek partners in the Comenius project visited Elda last November, we gave then some DVDs with images about the whole thing, but anyway, after this year`s edition, we will show some photos and tell you more things about them, here in the blog.
